Should you get a local SIM in Türkiye, or an eSIM?

This is the question most short-term visitors to Türkiye go back and forth on: buy a physical SIM from a shop, or install an eSIM ahead of time? Both have their place — but for most visitors, the answer is clear.

What a local SIM actually requires

Getting a line from a Turkish carrier is more of a process than most tourists expect: you need to visit a shop with your passport, fill out a registration form, and in some cases register your IMEI. That is time you probably don't want to spend on a trip that lasts a few days.

None of this applies to an eSIM: no Turkish subscription is created, no paperwork is required. The whole purchase happens online.

The airport SIM stand: usually the priciest option

Buying a SIM from the stand in the terminal right after landing feels convenient, but it is usually the most expensive route — the line itself and a separate setup/activation fee may both apply. On top of that, time spent in the queue is time taken out of that first half hour after landing.

When an eSIM makes more sense

For most visitors — trips lasting from a few days to a few weeks — an eSIM is the more practical option:
